But this peace is shattered forever when a curious hobbit, Lilo, breaks the seal of an ancient altar in a forbidden cave. The barrier separating the mortal world from the demon realm is destroyed. A corrosive black mist begins to cover the land, and from the darkness, countless goblins—the vanguard of the Demon King's army—emerge to plunge the world into terror. Gorm "the Hammer," one of the Four Heavenly Kings, leads his orcs to trample a nearby village, annihilating a community of humans and beastfolk with overwhelming violence. Sensing the global crisis, the Elven leaders entrust a young guard, Lyandor, with a mission to the Dwarven kingdom to revive an ancient alliance. On his journey, Lyandor witnesses a new threat: an attack by the Dragon-kin, who serve under the Heavenly Kings. He is gravely wounded and faces certain death, only to be saved by the unexpected arrival of the Dwarven King, Daurin, and his warriors, who burst forth from the earth. From the far west, a single, holy arrow from the Elven King's "Fairy Bow," imbued with the power of the World Tree, purifies the battlefield. But the joy of victory is tainted by a tragic revelation from the defeated Dragon-kin: "We are forced to obey, for our Queen is held captive." Meanwhile, Borin, a beastfolk warrior, and Kaelan, a human scholar, lead the survivors of their ravaged home on a desperate exodus towards the "Forgotten Fortress," a sanctuary mentioned in an ancient text. But the fortress they find is a defenseless ruin, and behind them, the Necromantic Army, led by the most powerful of the Four Heavenly Kings, fills the horizon in perfect, silent order. Through a life-risking act of telepathy from the Elven King, Lyandor learns of his new friends' plight. He races across the wilderness with inhuman speed and finally reaches the fortress. Elf, Dwarf, Beastfolk, Human—the prophesied companions meet for the first time. They combine their knowledge and courage to mount a desperate defense. However, their struggle is in vain against the might of the Skeleton General commanding the undead legion. He possesses a horrifying power: any ally he cuts down is instantly resurrected as an enemy soldier. Even the mighty King Daurin is frozen by a terror he has never known. In that moment of absolute despair, the wounded Dragon-kin warrior returns. To buy time for his former allies to escape, he performs a final, redemptive act of sacrifice, using a forbidden magic to transform into a colossal, god-like dragon. But even this immense power is eventually overwhelmed. He is slain by the Skeleton General, and in a final, blasphemous act, his corpse is reanimated as a soulless Undead Dragon. The heroes, having successfully retreated thanks to his sacrifice, can only watch from a distant hill. They witness the Skeleton General, with the new Undead Dragon at his side, report his victory to a silhouetted figure on a dark throne: the Demon King. This is the first story—of hope shattered, of heroes fallen, and of those who, even then, will rise to fight again.
